Inspired and Ready to Get Involved?

All clubs owe their continuing existence to the support and active participation of their members at all levels – they are run by the members for the members.

While we can all feel ‘time starved’ these days with so much going on in our lives, we rely on people who can give something extra back to their clubs.

Your hockey club needs that type of person right now as we are still seeking to fill the post of Umpiring Co-ordinator:-

Over the past eight years or so the role of Umpiring Officer (filled successively by Bill Bibby, Andy Howat and Barrie Izard) has proved very effective, with Yeovil and Sherborne gaining a reputation for the standard of our umpires, gaining many plaudits from visiting teams.  We are also fortunate in having three Level 1 Umpire Coaches in the Club which has allowed us to get probationary umpires qualified quickly and give others the confidence to umpire at higher levels.  However, the post of Umpiring Officer remains vacant and, unfortunately, the responsibility of organising umpires each week may well fall to Club and Team Captains if it is not filled.  Furthermore, the proper organisation of umpires is very important, not only to our enjoyment of the game, but also to comply with league regulations.  This post remains the only one left vacant on the management committee and it would be fantastic to complete the new line-up before the season gets underway proper. Be aware that you do not need to be an umpire or a current player to carry out this role and the organization of an online umpire booking system has made the role much easier.

If you feel you can help your club out by taking on the role – or know someone who can help – please contact the Chairman, Barrie Izard, or another committee member asap.

New Playing Shirts

Historically we change our shirts (but not our shorts/skirts and socks) every 6 or 7 years. The current shirt has never been universally popular and one or two are showing signs of wear; the management committee considered it sensible to proactively pursue a replacement at this time. Following-on from the AGM in May 2016, where new playing shirts were displayed, it has been decided that the club should move to a new style as produced by TK, and the order has now been placed. The shirts (men’s sample shown below) will be a similar colour to those we currently wear, but with white inserts; the ladies shirts are cut to suit and have no buttons to the v-collar. The material is a new breathable hockey shirt style. Numbers will be in white and are slimmer and thinner to enable the full range to be clearly and easily applied.

The shirts will cost £25 each and they will be available from Tony Pryce Sports early-to-mid September (an e-mail will be sent out to members when they are in stock). The purchasing process will be as normal – direct from Tony Pryce: Visit the shop, try a shirt for size, confirm your club number with staff and they will apply the number either while you wait, or you can return later to collect it.

It is IMPORTANT that you retain the shirt number you already have, or are given in the interim period, and do not attempt to change it: The numbers are used for league registration purposes and as such your number is unique to you. If you have any issues with your number then please contact Keith Walters, Director of Hockey direct (07815 906481), and please do not change what you have been given when collecting/purchasing your new shirt.

As on previous occasions there will be a transition period where there will be a mix of current and new style shirts on the pitch, but it is hoped that members will take the opportunity to purchase a new shirt as soon as possible.
