Level 1 Umpiring Course

Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club are looking to hold a Level 1 umpires course at the Griffin School on the Sunday 10th June starting at 09:30 to 16:30. It will be hosted by Pete Lovell who is the West Area Umpire Coordinator. The cost will be £35 or £25 for people in full time education and all monies redeemable by the club on qualifying.

We need to know numbers quickly as we have provisionally booked Pete Lovell from his busy schedule so please contact Andy Howat ASAP.

Everyone who has been on the course have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and made themselves a better and more understanding hockey player. So go along and get the knowledge to blow with confidence. It’s fun.

Coach Development Day and Funding for Coaches

Please find below the programme for a coach development day being held by SASP in Taunton on the 21st July 2012. There are varied workshops that may be of interest to some members. There is also a document provided by SASP with different funding avenues on it which may be of interest if anyone is thinking of applying to do a coaching course. The Club also has some funding available for coaching costs from completing Sportivate last year please contact Jo McDermid for more information.

West Schools Under 11 In2Hockey Tournament

Well done to Joe Stickley and Charlotte White for representing Yeovil & Sherborne Hockey Club as young umpires at the West Schools Under 11 In2Hockey tournament held at Millfield School on 28th April. It was a full day and they both did a great job umpiring 6 matches each.

Summer Hockey

With the 2011-2012 hockey season over, this summer Y&SHC has organised “Summer Hockey” at the Gryphon School every Wednesday from 7.30pm – 9.00pm. These sessions will start from the 2nd May and run until next seasons training starts as long as there is a demand for it.

We have the Gryphon pitch available for all of us to go up and have a knock about and “keep fit” (or have a good gossip) and is open to all Men and Ladies Teams. There will be no “1s over there, 2s over here” etc. this is all about meeting up and having fun playing a sport we all enjoy.

As this is an additional training session there will be a cost of roughly £2 each per session which will need to be paid before playing. This cost is not a set figure as the pitch hire will need to be covered each week so will depend on how many turn up.

Please feel free to bring along any friends who may be interested in playing, any students home from uni are always welcome as well as anyone who has never played before but would like to have a go, and as always, there is always an open invite to head back to the Digby Tap after for a swift half.

Everyone who is intending to take part will need to be registered with the Club for 2012-2013 season, registration forms can be found on the Club Website under Player Information/Club Documents. You can either hand in your registration form at your first session or e-mail it to Jo McDermid. If there are any Uni students who wish to attend but will not be playing for Y&SHC next season please just mark “Do not register with League” on the top of your registration form. It is essential that everyone does fill out a form so that we have emergency contact details “just in case” and to ensure you are insured through the Club “just in case”.

Yeovil and Sherborne Re-Awarded England Hockey’s ClubsFirst Accreditation

Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club has been recognised as working towards providing a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club environment, and as such has been re-awarded the England Hockey Board (EHB) ClubsFirst Accreditation. This re-accreditation covers the Club until 3rd April 2015.

Junior End of Season Party

Sunday 1st April saw around 50 of our junior members attend an end of season party and awards at the Oxley Centre in Sherborne. The children were involved in many activities for the first hour followed by a presentation of awards and tea. The award winners can be found on the Annual Award Page. Cameron Mck, Archie E, Hermione WH and Michael M stood up and thanked the coaches in speeches they had written. It was a fabulous afternoon and the Club would like to thank their sponsors: SmithGas, Symonds Budgens and The Kings Arms for all their support. The Club would also like to thank the Oxley Centre for organising the activities and their on going support of the Club.

Y&SHC wraps up 40th season

The Men’s C IX finished the season in style with a guest appearance from Alan Judge who has played for the Club for all 40 seasons since it s formation, his first game for Yeovil and Sherborne was in 1972.

The team also included Peter Jakes who has played hockey for 45 seasons and joined Y&SHC 24 years ago. He is the only player in the C XI to have played every league game this season.
