On a beautiful warm and sunny Septembers day 65 primary school pupils from, All Saints Church of England Primary School, Ash Church of England Primary School, Huish County Primary School, Kingsbury Episcopi Primary School, Martock Church of England and Stickland’s Primary School came to Sherborne for the first Primary Schools Taster Day hosted by Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club.  The children ranged from Years 3 to 6, some had never seen, let alone picked up a hockey stick before, and some had played at school.  Throughout the morning the children were put through their paces learning the basic skills of hockey and putting it into practice.  Their teachers were also there to learn, they were given training in Quicksticks, England Hockey’s 4 a side introductory game of hockey, designed especially for 7-11 year olds.  The afternoon culminated in mini matches between the age groups and a medal ceremony for all at the end.  Keith Walters the lead coach said “it has been a fantastic day and I hope the children will be inspired to continue with hockey and that the teachers will now be able to run some hockey sessions within the schools.  I would like to thank all the coaches  from the Club who have given up their time to help out, the teachers for making it possible by bringing the children and Sherborne Girls School for providing some of their own students to help out and for the use of the pitch”.
