Fair and consistent application of the Rules of Hockey by competent, confident umpires can make the difference between enjoying the sport of hockey, or not.

Umpiring at Yeovil & Sherborne Hockey Club is managed by the Umpiring Officer (see Club Contacts) whose role is to: appoint Club umpires to home matches when neutral umpires are not appointed by the region or county hockey umpiring association; liaise with the region and county over the appointment of neutral umpires; arrange and advertise umpiring courses; and encourage and manage the development and progress of Club umpires.

Umpire Appointments

Allocated umpires are shown on the Umpire Appointments pages (under Umpiring):  Neutral umpires appointed by West Hockey Umpires are indicated by (W) after their name, and likewise by (C) for Somerset County Hockey Umpires appointments.  If a visiting team is providing the umpire, the club’s name will be in brackets.

Club Umpire Availability

All Club Umpires are requested to keep the Umpiring Officer appraised (by e-mail, text or ‘phone) of their availability to umpire.

New Umpires/Umpire Development

In recent years the Club has been fortunate to have a large pool of qualified umpires with a wide range of experience, however, this resource needs to be grown.  Anyone wishing to qualify as an umpire should contact the Umpire Co-ordinator and look-out for Level 1 Umpiring Courses being announced on this website, usually under News but repeated on this page.  The Club is fortunate to have in its ranks 3 Level 1 Coaches and is set-up to coach and develop new umpires to grow the pool of experienced umpires available to officiate at all levels.  Umpires who wish to gain experience umpiring at higher levels are encouraged to do so, and should contact the Umpiring Officer in the first instance.

Umpiring Courses

All Level 1 umpiring courses are now centrally co-ordinated by England Hockey; courses are listed at the England Hockey Website Umpiring Courses

Candidates will have to complete the England Hockey online rules test beforehand.

The following courses are currently being advertised in our area:
