Umpire Training

New Umpires

For many years the Club has been fortunate to have a large pool of qualified umpires with a wide range of experience, however, numbers have reduced in recent seasons, particularly following COVID, and so this resource needs to be grown.  Anyone wishing to qualify as an umpire should contact the Umpire Co-ordinator and look-out for Level 1 Umpiring Courses being announced on this website, usually under News but repeated on this page.

On-line  Training

Since COVID umpiring courses have been conducted on-line and will continue so for the foreseeable future.  To find out more about umpire development and training course please click on and read this document: YSHC Intro to Umpiring (post-COVID)

Umpiring Courses

All Level 1 umpiring courses are now centrally co-ordinated by England Hockey; courses are listed at the England Hockey Website Umpiring Courses

Candidates will have to complete the England Hockey online rules test beforehand.

Umpire Development

The Club is fortunate to have in its ranks 3 Level 1 Coaches as well as Level 2 umpires, and is set-up to coach and develop new umpires to grow the pool of experienced umpires available to officiate at all levels.  Umpires who wish to gain experience umpiring at higher levels are encouraged to do so, and should contact the Umpiring Officer in the first instance.

Training Costs

The Club will reimburse the training costs associated with qualifying as a Level 1 umpire when any person qualifies and starts taking club appointments.
